I have always been interested in health and wellness. Upon becoming a doctor I gravitated to Family Practice since I was fascinated with the concept of caring for an entire family and teaching them to live healthy and prevent disease. I had the privilege to practice in this manner and it was the most rewarding time in my life. I would discuss diet, exercise, stress reduction and changing life perspectives with my patients.
Slowly, the system in which medicine is practiced shifted. Managed Care became a dominant force in the marketplace and could neither be ignored nor avoided. The time that I spent in patient education was being cut by paperwork and other beauracratic concerns. Before I knew it, the system changed my title from "doctor" to "healthcare provider". It further reclassified my "patients" to "covered lives". It went on to redefine a "doctor's practice" as a "catchment area". The more the terms changed the more depersonalized medicine seemed to become. The once sacred doctor-patient relationship became a sterile business transaction.
I attempted to resist the changes that were occurring by continuing to practice in my usual manner. Eventually, the tide became too strong to swim against. The physical, emotional, and financial strain became too much.
I admitted defeat and left practice. I agonized over what to do next. I wanted to be a doctor my whole life. I could not think of another thing I wanted to do with my life. After many months of soul searching, I found medical research.
Medical research afforded me a vehicle in which I could still see a limited number of patients if they were appropriate for the trial in question. I was able to do a meticulous history and physical exam. I was able to analyze blood work, x-rays, and EKGs before deciding whether or not to place them into the trial. Another bonus was not having to enter a financial arrangement with the patient. The studies were paid for by a grant from the pharmaceutical companies, and the patients received compensation for their time and travel. There was no longer any tension between doctor and patient concerning fees or money owed. I was able to concentrate on the medicine without being distracted by finances. Most importantly, I was able to spend more time with patients. I once again felt like I was making a difference in people's lives. There is great satisfaction in teaching people how to take responsibility and own their own health.
I started researching vitamins and supplements, since I was accustomed to taking them for many years. I found out that there is no oversight organization involved in the quality assurance of products manufactured as nutritional supplements. I used resources available to me to test several products to match label claims to actual ingredients. The results shocked me. Some liquid products contained predominately fruit juice and components listed on the label were not only in concentrations less than advertised, but were absent altogether. Similar findings came from analysis of pills and capsules.
I contacted certain production companies and asked whether or not certificates of analysis could be obtained on products made at their facilities. Many refused, others said yes, providing that they could supply the certificate themselves. Very few were willing to have an outside facility perform the analysis.
I believe in vitamin and mineral supplements. I decided to formulate my own product in liquid form, to maximize absorption and bioavailability, and to find a company that would produce it to my standards, and would allow periodic checks from outside facilities to authenticate content.
After the process was completed and authenticated, I began taking the product for several months. I also gave it to my family. When patients asked me to recommend a vitamin/mineral supplement, I honestly told them that the one I formulated was the only one that I trusted to contain what was on the label in an absorbable, bioavailable form. Soon patients began taking the vitamin and asking for more.
My vision is to provide a road map for healthy living in today's hectic world. As this site grows, information on diet, exercise, nutritional supplements, and stress reduction will be provided. Common illnesses will be explained, as well as their treatments. I will formulate and make available healthy, reliable, nutritional supplements. Through the miracle of technology, I hope to spend the same quality time with the many as I do now with the few.
I intend to do this through the addition of free content on medical illnesses, a free newsletter, and eventually the addition of e-books and e-courses on specific topics.
I welcome your feedback and comments. I will try to keep the content and tools on this site dedicated to the needs of my subscribers. I look forward to a healthy and enlightening journey together. |
